Abstract
A process for the production of tubes by extrusion from polyvinyl chloride compositions, the tubes being porous or capable of being made porous, comprises using as starting material a composition of polyvinyl chloride and one or more elastomers and/or alkyd resins, the composition being mixed with a water-soluble salt and having an Izod impact value of at least 20 kg.cm./cm2 at 23 DEG C. sufficient salt being used for the extruded tube to be capable of being made porous by a leaching process. Immediately after the extrusion the diameter of the hot tube is preferably enlarged to facilitate removal of the salt and increase the porosity. The quantity of salt may vary from 5 to 80 parts per 100 parts of PVC composition. The salt is preferably wetted with water before use. In a table the results are given of tests applied to tubes of PVC and of PVC mixed with various proportions of rubber, and salt particles of 30-40 mesh. The rubber is a mixture of styrene. butadiene and acrylonitrile-butadiene rubbers. In an example 100 parts PVC of Izod impact value 50 kg.cm./cm2 with 25 parts sodium chloride (4% water-content) are blended, extruded as a tube, stretched while hot and cooled in water (which also leaches out some of the salt).
