971,208. Magnetic compositions. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Nov. 4, 1960 [Nov. 10, 1959], No. 37934/60. Heading H1H. In preparing a magnetic ferrite body with a square hysteresis loop by sintering a mixture of metal oxides comprising 38-44.4 mol. per cent Fe 2 O 3 , 51.1-60 mol. per cent MnO, and 0-5 mol. per cent CuO or CrO + NiO, the sintering at a temperature between 1000 and 1500 C. is interrupted by cooling the body to a temperature below. 250 C., after which sintering at the original temperature is completed. The metal oxides are ball-milled forming a slurry which is dried, ground and calcined at 600 to 1000 C. for 30-180 minutes. The material is reground, a binder (polyvinyl alcohol) and a lubricant (dibutyl phthalate) are added, and the mixture is moulded to form a " green " body. This is heated to 600 C. when the binder and lubricant are driven off. The body is then sintered between 1100 and 1500 C. for a total time of 15 to 30 minutes, this being interrupted by the removal of the body from the furnace when it is cooled to below 250 C. This quench temperature may be maintained for a non- critical time, i.e. minutes or days. The squareness of the magnetic loop is improved by the method.
