Abstract
971,140. Valves. T. J. BOLLING. Dec. 21, 1962 [Feb. 1, 1962], No. 48498/62. Heading F2V. In a valve having a transverse bore obturated by the sliding fit of an element movable upon a stem in a lateral bore, a valve sealing means is effected upon closure by a seal actuated from a closed fluid system containing a piston acted upon by the valve stem. Transverse bore 12 is valved by gate 14, vertically movable upon hand - wheel rotated threaded stem 15 passing through a non-rotatable collar, having projections 25b and horizontally pivotable about pins in openings 23g, to engage non-rotatable nut 23a interlocked with closure 14. Upon closing the gate, the projections 25b bear upon pistons 26 against springs 41 to effect compression of fluid in passages 33 which, on one side of the valve, connect via bore 37 to circumferential groove 381, sealed between 0-rings 90 and 91, to force cylindrical insert 31X, resiliently seated upon Bellville spring 31a, against gate 14 so that this bears against a seal 34 within a fixed cylindrical insert 31 on the other side. Seal 34 is actuated in similar manner from a piston 26 via connection of circumferentially spaced passages 39 with annular groove 38. In alternative embodiments a seal 34 may similarly be effected from one side of the gate against a non-fluid-actuated, Bellville spring seated, cylindrical insert or, with a valve element having a longitudinally split and sprung apart gate (Fig. 3, not shown), a resilient seal 34 may be applied to each side. In a plug lift valve, Fig. 7, the plug 61 is seated by rotation of the threaded stem 15 which thereafter continues movement to act directly upon piston 26 to effect sealing of rings 34, via passages 37 to annular groove 38. In a rotatable plug valve, Fig. 5, sealing is effected upon rotation of the actuating shaft from which a cam 60 engages piston 26. Sticking upon the valve seats after prolonged closure is avoided by the return springs 41 to pistons 26.
