Abstract

971,113. Ammunition fuzes. INVENTA A.G. FUR FORSCHUNG UND PATENTVERWERTUNG. Feb. 20, 1961 [Feb. 18, 1960], No. 6179/61. Heading F3A. A projectile percussion fuze comprises a rotatable cylinder 3 which depending on its angular position renders the fuze safe prior to arming, armed or permanently safe. The cylinder 3 is normally locked by a device comprising a bolt 13, spring 15 and a ball 16 which engages in a groove 24 in the cylinder. On launching, the bolt 13 sets back to allow ball 16 to roll out of groove 24, thereby freeing cylinder 3. However, at the same time a tube 17 around a striker 19 also sets backs and enters a bore 11 locking the cylinder and pushing a sleeve 10 to the bottom of the bore where it protrudes into an annular groove 12 in the cylinder 3. When the acceleration of the projectile ceases the tube 17 is moved forwardly by a spring 18 out of bore 11 so that cylinder 3 is then free to rotate clockwise under the action of a spring 4. Rotation continues until sleeve 10 encounters a stop 8 which projects from the body of the fuze into the groove 12, Fig. 3. In this position a primer 5, which via a bore 7 communicates with a relay 6, lies along the longitudinal axis 23 of the fuze, i.e. in the path of the striker 19. According to the invention, should the cylinder 3 be released before launching takes place, rotation thereof occurs until a stop 9 projecting from the cylinder into groove 12 encounters stop 8, Fig. 4. Accidental release of cylinder 3 before launching occurs without displacement of sleeve 10 due to inertial movement of tube 17. In this condition the fuze remains permanently inactive. The invention may be applied to electrical impact operation and a braking system is described to retard the rotation of cylinder 3.
