Abstract
971,059. Photo-electric motor-speedcontrollers. SINGER CO. May 15, 1963 [May 21, 1962], No. 19327/63. Heading G1A. A motor speed controller of the variable resistance type comprises an opaque enclosure having a base and a cover, a photo-cell mounted on the base, a light source mounted on the cover adjacent to the photo-cell, a shutter mounted for movement between the light source and the photo-cell to control the amount of light transmission therebetween, biasing means normally to position the shutter to cut off all light transmission and means including an operator controlled element for moving the shutter against the biasing means to effect control of the light transmission between the light source and the photo-cell. In the arrangement shown the photo-cell consists of a photoconductor 27 mounted in an opaque sleeve 29 which when the shutter 19 is in the closed position (shown in dotted lines) prevents stray light from reaching the photoconductor. The shutter 19 is operated by a pedal (Figs. 1 and 2 not shown) through a mechanical linkage against the action of a spring. Shutter blades of different configurations from that shown may be used, for obtaining a desired characteristic of controller resistance against pedal movement. Specification 953,061 is referred to.
