Abstract

970,973. Grinding. LENTILLES OPHTALMIQUES RATIONNELLES S.A. Sept. 19, 1963 [Oct. 6, 1962], No. 36969/63. Heading B3D. A hand tool for use, in association with a conventional rotary polisher 50, in polishing a corneal lens 20 comprises a handle 1 at one end of which is mounted a device 17 for gripping a corneal lens, the device being associated with driving means 45 and being rotatably mounted in the handle. The gripping device consists of a rubber suction cup 17 mounted on the end of a tubular shaft 5 rotatably supported by bearing surfaces 3, 4 in the handle 1. The outer end of the shaft is connected by a screw 40 to a plug 41 on one end of a flexible shaft 42 connected at its other end by reduction gearing 43 to an electric motor 45. A rod 23 is disposed within the shaft 5 and is provided at one end with a piston 24 and at the other end with a member 29 connected by a screw 36 passing through a slot 37 in the shaft to a sleeve 34 having a flange 39. A spring 30 acts to urge the piston away from the suction cup. When a lens is to be polished, the piston is moved against the spring by pushing on the flange 39 and the suction cup placed against the convex side of the lens. The flange is then released so that the spring lifts the piston to create a suction in the cup and hold the lens while it is rotated by the motor 45 and placed in contact with the rotary polisher 50 which has a hemispherical head 51 of expanded polyurethane foam covered with a polishing cloth.
