Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:0970963/C1/1> wherein R is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and R1 is a -CO-NR11R111 group, R11 being a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group having up to 4 carbon atoms and R111 being an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group having up to 4 carbon atoms, or R11 and R111 forming together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached a heterocyclic ring having 1 or 2 hetero-atoms, and wherein the 5- and 8-hydrogen atoms and the 8-R1 group have the b -configuration, and their preparation by transforming dihydro-D-lysergic acid II or its 1-methyl derivative into the corresponding hydrazide by treatment with hydrazine hydrate and warming, converting the hydrazide to the azide by treatment with nitrous acid, and reacting the azide dissolved in an ethereal solvent with an amine of formula HNR11R111. Amines specified are ethylamine, diethylamine; propylamine; isopropylamine; 2-propanolamine, n-butylamine; isobutylamine; pyrrolidine, piperidine, piperazine and morpholine. The compounds of the invention have oxytocic, antienteraminic, adrenolytic, hypotensive and sedative activity and may be used in pharmaceutical compositions in combination with a therapeutically-acceptable solid or liquid diluent or carrier.
