970,870. Making magnetic heads. COSMOCORD Ltd. July 27, 1962 [July 27, 1961], No. 27239/61. Heading B3A. [Also in Division G5] A quarter-track type magnetic tape-recording &c. head has the transducing portions of the heads defined in track-width and in track-totrack spacing by assembling overwide head units 1, 2 in a stack, which may include an interhead screen 4, and gang-milling shallow grooves 13-16 such that the faces 5, 6 of the heads, adjacent the tape 7 are left with the desired width W 1 , W 2 , track-to-track space S 1 and desired margins, S 2 S 3 , relative to the ends of the stack. The grooves 13-16 are filled with epoxy resin and the tape-contacting face polished in normal manner. The method (with only two grooves) may also be used to make single-track heads, and more generally to magnetic devices requiring precise polar dimensions.
