Waste handling apparatus comprises a comminutor 10 having as its inlet a feed-tube 18 to depend into the waste material, so that for material to reach the comminutor, it must travel upwardly through at least part of the feed-tube, and a pump 14 connected to the outlet of the comminutor to draw a suspension of the waste material in a liquid through said feed tube and comminutor. As described, the feed tube extends into a tank 60 containing the waste in the form of a suspension in water, the pump and, in a further embodiment the comminutor, being controlled by a switch, which is actuated in response to predetermined upper and lower levels of waste material relative to the feed-tube by two electrodes 22, 24, or floats. The comminutor, which may be driven by the same motor as the pump, includes a fixed cutting ring having two sets of teeth for coarse and fine grinding, and a driven rotor comprising a slotted disc and two cutter arms carring four hardened-steel cutters. The pump shown is of the kind provided with universal joints at its driven end and comprising two helical elements meshing together enclosed one within the other, the outer element having one more thread than the inner element and being made of resilient material. It is arranged for the velocity of flow in the feed tube to be such that the heavy particles will drop out under gravity and so avoid the need for a screen to protect the comminutor. The drive to the comminutor provides means for automatically reversing the rotor on successive operations to prevent clogging of the comminutor. Where a non-self-priming pump is used the comminutor may be mounted below the level of the material suspension to be pumped, and the feed-tube may be in the form of an inverted-U-tube.
