Abstract

The hydrocracking of a nitrogen-containing hydrocarbon liquid is effected by contacting with hydrogen and a hydrogenation catalyst to convert nitrogenous impurities to ammonia, separating the effluent into gas and liquid, removing ammonia from the gas and recombining with the liquid and subjecting the mixture to hydrocracking. Hydrofining is effected over a Group VI and/or VIII metal or oxide or sulphide thereof, supported if desired, at 400-850 DEG F., 50-2000 p.s.i.g., 0.5-20 vol/vol/hour with 200-10,000 SCF of hydrogen per barrel of feed. The liquid product is stripped with hydrogen and the gases combined with the separated gas from which ammonia is then removed by scrubbing with water or sulphuric acid. Hydrocracking is then effected over an acidic cracking catalyst containing 0.1-40% of a hydrogenating component at 300-850 DEG F., 300-5000 p.s.i.g., 0.1-10 vol/vol/hour with 1000-20,000 SCF of hydrogen per barrel. Hydrogen separated is recycled to both stages.
