In a flame welding torch, the burner nozzle 20 has an axial passage 19 through which powdered welding material is fed and one or more passages 22 radially spaced from the axial passage 19 and through which gas is fed to form the flame, and a needle 35 in the axial passage has one or more valve elements 33, 36 normally closing the axial passage 19 and openable by manual actuation of the needle 35. The valve elements 33, 36 are actuated by a spring-loaded lever 62. The valve element 33 is formed on a rubber sleeve 40 fixed at its ends to the casing 28 and the needle 35. The welding powder, e.g. a metal, e.g. nickel-boron, and/or a ceramic, is supplied by gravity to the axial passage 19 from a container 45 having a screen 51 and a baffle 53. Oxygen and acetylene pre-mixed or mixed in the torch handle 10 are fed through a pipe 14 to the passages 22. The burner nozzle 20 has a rounded tip and cooling members 21 which may be longitudinal or annular fins or peglike projections. The needle 35 has a roughened exterior 66 and a projecting filament 35A which serve to agitate the welding powder. A bore through the needle 35 communicates with an enclosed chamber 44 having a diaphragm 44B connected to the needle so that actuation of the lever 62 causes a puff of air to pass through the needle to clear the end of the passage 19. In a modification flux in the form of a gas, liquid or powder is fed through the bore of the needle 35. A heat reflector 60, Fig. 6, may be clipped on to the burner nozzle. Alternatively the reflector 60 may be replaced by a tube of carbonaceous material which reduces the oxygen content in the surrounding atmosphere.
