A galvanic cell for detecting and assessing the concentration of oxygen in a gas includes a cathode which is not attacked by the electrolyte in either the presence or absence of oxygen, a thallium anode an and a liquid electrolyte. A layer 4 of thallium on tube 3 is covered by a sleeve 5 of porous PVC, overlaid by a silver sleeve 6 forming the cathode. The electrolyte consists of an aqueous solution of thallous hydroxide or of a double carbonate of thallium, and disolves thallous oxide formed on the anode during operation of the cell.
