Abstract

1,173,858. Electro-chemical analysis cells. HONEYWELL Inc. July 10, 1968 [Sept. 21, 1967], No.32981/68. Heading G1N. In an electro-chemical cell for sensing oxygen in a gaseous mixture by its depolarizing effect on one of the electrodes, a substantially non-aqueous electrolyte is used comprising a solute dissolved in a polyhydric alcohol solvent. As shown in Fig. 1, the cell comprises an oxygen permeable membrane 12, a thin gold layer cathode 13, a silver corrugated cylinder anode 15 and a reservoir 11a containing excess solutes 22 separated from the anode by a filter 21. The elctrolyte may consist of an alkali metal halide or hydroxide, sodium sulphide, sodium cyanide or ammonium carbonate solute dissolved in a glycerin or ethylene glycol solvent and potassium carbonate or bicarbonate may be added to repel carbon dioxide.
