Abstract

969,920. Digital data storage. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Sept. 14,1961 [Nov. 2,1960], No. 32974/61. Heading G4A. [Also in Division H3] A storage element is selected by the coincidence of pulses transmitted from the ends of a transmission line. Only one pulse generator is used and coincidence is effected between a first pulse, reflected from an open- or short-circuited termination of the line, and a second pulse, timed to coincide with the first at the required element. The storage elements may be Esaki diodes (Fig. 5) connected across the transmission line, such as 19b, which has an open-circuited termination. The diodes are biased by voltage +E to the bistable mode of operation. The two cordinates for selec-. tion of a particular diode are driver and time of second pulse. If the storage elements are magnetic cores 41 the line is short circuited to give a reversal of voltage on reflection of the first pulse. The resultant double voltage at coincidence of the first pulse switches a magnetic core connected in series with the line at the point of coincidence.
