Abstract

969,919. Railway vehicle undercarriages. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIV - UND MASCHINENFABRIK. Sept. 6, 1961 [Sept. 8, 1960], No. 32050/61. Heading B7L. A motor driven bogie comprising a frame 3, Figs. 1 and 2, and axles 1, 2, supporting the frame 3 from axle box housings 5 through springs 4, is connected to the vehicle body 7 by two linkages either one of which transmits the tractive and braking forces according to the direction of movement, and linkage comprising a pair of rods 23, 24, pivotally connected together by a joint 25, Fig. 3, which permits relative movements of the sections in vertical planes only and which is guided transversely of the frame 3 by a guide surface 27, the rod 23 being pivoted to the bogie at 22 and pivoted to the vehicle body 7 at 28. A lost-motion connection is provided at the pivoted 28 so that the linkage can only transmit traction forces but not compression forces. The pivots 22 of the two linkages are carried by a connecting member 21 between the housings of electric motors 14 which drive the axles 1, 2 through gears 15. The vehicle body 7 is carried by a cross-member 8 mounted at each end on a rubber spring unit 12 on cradles carried by pivoted rocking bars 10 on the frame 3. The joint 25, Fig. 3, comprises a fork on the end of the rod 23 embracing the end of the rod 24 and the fork externally carries rollers 26 engaging the surface 27 carried by the bottom of the associated motor housing. Instead of a fork the end of the rod 23 may comprise a frame within which are mounted the rollers, the frame being pivoted to the forked end of the rod 24. The linkages assume the positions shown in Fig. 2 as the vehicle travels around a curve, but owing to the nearness of the pivots 22 to the bogie centre, there is only a small restoring torque on the bogie. Moreover, an upward force acts on the joint 25 to compensate the additional loading on the associated axle which occurs when the bogie accelerates.
