Abstract

969,866. Disc brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. Nov. 8, 1962 [Nov. 8, 1961], Nos. 40045/61 and 40046/61. Heading F2E. In a disc brake of the kind in which pads on opposite sides of a disc are associated with a movable member carrying a fluid pressure cylinder the piston of which acts directly on one pad so that the other pad is applied by reaction force, manually operated applying means is provided comprising a lever pivoted on the cylinder and acting directly on the pad applied by the piston, the pivot mounting for the lever being adjustable to move the pivot towards and away from the disc. As shown, the movable member consists of a plate 51 of closed loop formation slidably carried by a fixed support 46 of inverted U form having supporting flanges 55. Plates 56 are detachably mounted on the support 46 between which backing plates 49 carrying pads 48 are located to prevent them from moving circumferentially or radially outwards. Cap members 58 are bolted to the support to lock the plates 56 in position. The pads are applied to a disc 47 by a fluid pressure cylinder 52 secured to plate 51, the piston 53 acting directly on one pad and reaction force applying the other pad. The manually operated lever 67 is pivotally mounted on the cylinder either at one side only, as shown, or at both sides, by forming the lever with a bifurcation. In either case the pivotal mounting consists of a fork or forks carried by a threaded rod or rods 64 screwed into a threaded bore in one or both of the mounting flanges 62, 63 of the cylinder, the or each rod having a locknut 71 which can be released to allow movement of the pivot to be effected manually.
