Abstract
A method of producing light-weight building elements, particularly building stones, from blowable granular materials (e.g. expanded clay) comprises heating the material to such an extent that it attains a pyroplastic condition at the outer surface without losing its granular structure, and then immediately after reaching this condition it is filled into moulds and compacted by compression, tamping, or vibration. In a modification of this method the material is heated until the particles are pyroplastic throughout their whole mass, in which case the treatment can be carried out continuously, e.g. in an extrusion press.
