Abstract

An oil-soluble alkaline earth neutralised hydrolysate comprises the hydrolysed product of the reaction of a phosphorus sulphide with a hydrocarbon mixture of from 40 to 90% of a low molecular weight polymer of a mono-olefin containing less than 6 carbon atoms and from 10 to 60% of solvent-extracted hydrocarbon lubricant oil. The hydrolysed phospho-sulphurised product is neutralised with a basic alkaline earth compound in the presence of water and a lower alkanol, and the water and lower alkanol removed from the mixture. Phosphorus pentasulphide is the preferred sulphide, while the molecular weight of the mono-olefin polymer is preferably from 300 to 10,000 and it may be a butylene or propylene polymer. The solvent extracted oil may be a solvent extracted mineral oil of from SAE10 to SAE50, the basic compound one of barium and the lower alkanol, methanol The reaction of the sulphide with the hydrocarbon mixture is preferably carried out at 150 to 600 DEG F., more preferably at 300 to 500 DEG F. and the hydrolysis at 200 to 500 DEG F. (250-400 DEG F. preferably) with steam. A hydrocarbon diluent, preferably in amount from 50 to 65% of the hydrolysed product, may be added before neutralisation.ALSO:A lubricant composition contains a major proportion of normally liquid lubricating oil and from 0.002 to 20% of an oil-soluble alkaline earth neutralized hydrolysed product of the reaction of a phosphorus sulphide with a hydrocarbon mixture of from 40 to 90% of a low molecular weight polymer of a mono-olefin containing less than six carbon atoms and from 10 to 60% of solvent extracted hydrocarbon lubricant oil (see Division C3). Specified lubricating oils are mineral lubricating oils, hydrocarbon oils obtained by the polymerization of olefins, and synthetic lubricating oils of the alkylene oxide type and the polycarboxylic acid ester type such as the oil-soluble esters of adipic acid, sebacic acid and azelaic acid. Concentrates of a suitable oil base containing 20 to 50% of these compositions may be used as blending agents. In examples, the composition sometimes contains a zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate.
