A machine for the automatic loading of pallets with boxes &c. includes a framework 1, Fig. 2, with a power-driven roller-way 2 to which the boxes are supplied in succession by a conveyer 36. When a desired number of boxes, e.g. three, have been fed to the roller-way the foremost box 39 operates a valve to bring a stop 37 into play to halt the supply. An abutment 15 is then struck by that box and a switch operated to stop a motor which drives a boxreceiving platform 16 vertically. Air cylinders 12, Figs. 1 and 2, are also energized to force discs 13 against the boxes which are held between the discs and support rollers 14. A carriage 4 supporting the roller-way 2 is then moved laterally from under the boxes by a pneumatic cylinder 7, whereupon pneumatic cylinders 9 are energized, and a carriage 8 on which the cylinders 12 and discs 13 are mounted is driven downwardly together with the line of boxes. As the boxes approach the platform the latter is driven downwardly one step; when the boxes are placed thereon the energizing of the cylinders 12 and 9 is reversed, the boxes released and the carriages 8 and 4 returned; the stop 37 is released and further boxes supplied to the roller-way. When a desired number of boxes has been stacked on the platform the latter is lowered to its bottom position during which time a pallet 34 has been supplied to a conveyer 31 from a pallet magazine 34 by supports 27 driven vertically by pneumatic cylinders 29. The pallet is carried by the conveyer 31 and a roller-way 33 to a position below the platform and when the latter reaches its lowest position pneumatic cylinders 24 are energized, whereby a cross-piece 23 pushes the stack of boxes over the pallet and simultaneously the pallet is advanced over the rollerway 33 by drive members 26 on rods 25 attached to the cross-piece. After delivery of the stack the cross-piece is returned and the platform raised to its uppermost position to receive a further stack.
