Abstract

969,422. Melting snow. THERMAL RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CORPORATION. Nov. 6, 1962 [July 31, 1962], No. 41883/62. Heading E1G. In snow melting apparatus, combustion gases are directed from a burner nozzle surrounded by a downcomer tube down through a body of water in a housing around which snow is heaped, and discharged laterally from the lower end of the downcomer tube to force water to spill over the top of the housing into the snow surrounding it. As shown, Fig. 1, snow is loaded into a tank 11 around a burner housing 35, a minimum level w, Fig. 5, of melted snow being maintained in the housing due to the height of the openings in drain pipes 12 in the tank, the level being variable by adjustment of outlet valves 14. A downcomer tube 30 surrounding a burner 21 has a closure plate 31 spaced from its lower end which is located above the lower end of the housing 35. The upper end of the housing is cut away at 36 over the major part of the side in contact with the snow. In operation hot combustion gases from the burner 21 flow out from the downcomer tube at 33 heating the water within the housing 35 and forcing it over the cut away edge 37 on to the snow in the tank 11. A deflector plate 17 prevents water splashing upwardly out of the tank. In an alternative embodiment (not shown) a tank has a burnit unit at each end. The method may be carried out without the tank by heaping snow around a burner/housing unit supported by known means in a pit.
