Abstract
969,384. Electric selective signalling. MINISTER OF AVIATION. May 16,1963 [May 25, 1962], No.20163/62. Heading G4H. An impedance X is measured in a bridge circuit incorporating a balancing element RV which is varied cyclically by means M which is also coupled to a shaft position encoder SE to provide an instantaneous digital indication of the state of balancing element RV, a signal pulse being produced at balance (of the bridge) to read-out the indication of encoder SE. In the Figure, X is a resistance and balancing element RV is a circular potentiometer driven continuously by a motor M. At balance, a series circuit of amplifier A, threshold circuit TC and differentiator D cause encoder read-out into a temporary store TS which is emptied into a permanent store PS (magnetic or punched tape) once per cycle. Store TS may be omitted. Independence X may be a capacitance or inductance, balancing element RV then being a variable capacitor or inductance.
