969,239. Variable concentration gradient devices; mixing liquids. TECHNICON CHROMATOGRAPHY CORPORATION. Sept. 12, 1961 [Oct. 3, 1960], No. 32617/61. Headings B1C and B1X. A variable concentration gradient device for supplying liquid of continuously varying concentration to a chromatographic column comprises a series of individual containers, for containing liquids of differing concentrations, mounted on a support, each container having its own individual base provided with a valvecontrolled liquid outlet separate from the support and adapted to be connected in liquid flow communication with other containers. As shown in Figs. 1 and 5, the device 10 comprises a supporting base 12 having a central column 14 surrounded by chambers 1-9, each having inlets 56 and outlets 58 with stop-cocks 60. Inlet 62 of chamber 9 is sealed after filling, and outlet 22 of chamber 1 may be connected to a chromatographic column. Liquid flows in succession from chamber 9 through each of the other chambers to chamber 1 so that the concentration in each of chambers 1-8 varies continuously. Mixer 18, with stirrers 20, is supported on the upper ends of said chambers. Each chamber is provided with a vent 64 to ensure hydrostatic equilibrium. Column 14 comprises a tube 34 surrounded by verticallyspaced sleeves between which are clamped circular support plates 40, 42 and 44. Plates 42 and 44 include a series of interaligned circular indentations and are provided with springs 72 which grip the outer surfaces of the chambers and hold them in contact with said indentations ; the chambers are lengths of glass tube. Pins 80 extend downwardly from mixer 18 through plates 42 and 44 to orientate the mixer with respect to the chambers. The stirrers are rotated by friction wheels 92 one of which is driven by a shaft 94.
