Abstract
<PICT:0969218/C1/1> Light-weight rounded grains of clay with honeycombed structure are produced by heating wet plastic clay to incipient melting in a rotary kiln, the drying zone of which is provided with screens or grates which delay the passage through the drying zone of undesirably large lumps of clay. The order of size of the grains is 0.5-3.0 cms. and their weight about 300 kg./cu.m. They are useful as aggregates for lightweight concrete. The first lot of screens, 1, divide the interior of the drying zone of the kiln into quadrants. They are followed by a cylindrical screen 2 built up from a circular or a longitudinal course of iron bars and then by a cone or taper section 3 built up from circular rings and with a central aperture facing towards the burning zone. To obtain regular feeding of the kiln and to prevent freshly introduced wet clay adhering to the kiln wall near the entrance, a heat-conductive cylindrical or conical casing 4 is arranged at the feeding end, spaced from the kiln-wall so that waste gases 5 from the kiln can pass inside and outside the casing. Clay 6 is fed into the casing, the walls of which are kept hot enough to prevent the clay adhering to them. If desired, chains may be hung inside the kiln to increase the surface available for heat transfer. Damming units of various kinds, e.g. inclined shovels, may also protrude inwards from the walls of the kiln.
