A road vehicle is propelled by a stream 16 of air directed upwardly and rearwardly of the vehicle by a propeller 13 driven by an engine 11 at the front of the vehicle. A windscreen 15 separates the vehicle driver from the air stream which is inclined at an angle between 35 and 55 degrees to the horizontal. The propeller is of variable and reversible pitch.
