Abstract
968,788. Drawing sheet glass. GLAVERBEL. Jan. 7, 1963 [Feb. 21, 1962], No. 751/63. Heading C1M. In the drawing of sheet glass in a drawing chamber with a non-oxidizing atmosphere, starting from a preformed bulb whose thickness decreases in the drawing direction between its upper surface substantially horizontal at the level of the glass bath in a melting tank and its lower surface in contact with a carbon component, the carbon component consists of a horizontal rotary roller. The roller may be rotated at the same peripheral speed as that of the drawing speed or they may differ. Glass sheet 27 is drawn by rollers 9 from a tank of molten glass 2 having a refractory fixed front wall 3 and a vertically movable wall 4 of carbon and over a carbon roller 8. The glass is cooled through ducts 5 in wall 4, the bore of roller 8 and duct 19 in a cooler 18, so that both surfaces are cooled adjacent the glass bulb and the drawing speed can be increased. Further coolers 21, 22 assist setting of the glass to prevent damage by drawing rollers 9. The wall 4 has the sill 7 overlying the roller 8 and the curve 12 follows the curve of the roller. The rear 17 of the wall 4 is also curved in the forward feed direction of the glass. The wall 4 and roller 8 are mounted in a common support 14 and they are adjustable together by a screw 15 to vary the thickness of the bulb. The chamber 24 has an inlet 23 for the injection of nitrogen under pressure. The glass sheet may be drawn horizontally as at 27, obliquely as at 27<SP>1</SP> or downwardly as at 27<SP>11</SP>.
