Abstract
968,455. Inverting. BRUSH ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Sept. 21, 1961 [Sept. 22, 1960; Sept. 11, 1961], Nos. 32536/60 and 32455/61. Heading H2F. An inverter 20 is commutated by the capacitor 17 connected across the bridge of switching elements A, B, C, D. The inverter elements may be thyratrons, mercury arc tubes, or silicon controlled rectifiers, and the bridge elements any of these, or transistors. At starting the elements A and C are switched on to charge the capacitor, and then extinguished automatically. To commutate the inverter, elements B and D are switched, connecting the charged capacitor so as to reverse the polarity of the inverter input. For inductive loads voltage limiting diodes L may be used, and the voltage of the commutating pulse may be increased by connecting a D.C. bias in series with the bridge at 27, 28. The single capacitance required is smaller than the total capacitance that would be required for commutating a polyphase inverter from the A.C. side in the usual way. If the inverter has two elements in series (e.g. a bridge circuit) separate commutating pulses are desirable. Fig. 4 (not shown) shows two capacitors 17a, 176, in series across the bridge, with their midpoint connected to the neutral point 30 of the D.C. supply, or to the mid-point of capacitors 31, 32 connected between the D.C. supply terminals. Two bias voltages, and smoothing inductors in both D.C. lines are necessary.
