[Also in Division H4] A machine for grinding by ultrasonic means comprises a transducer 5, Fig. 2, attached to a frame by a support 8 which extends in a direction parallel to the axis of vibration of the transducer and, in operation, vibrates in a direction parallel to this axis with its nodal point co-incident with its point of attachment to the frame. The tool head 3, which is mounted above a compound work-supporting table, is carried by a slide 4 adjustable vertically on an upright by a motor-driven pinion 22 engaging a rack 21 on the slide which is counterbalanced by a weight 25 operating through a further rack-and-pinion 28; a damper 32a is provided which may be adjusted to give a greater damping effect in one direction than the other. The holder 7 of the tool 7a is fixed to a flange 6 at the end of a thin-walled tube constituting the support 8, the core of the transducer 5 being secured to the flange 6 by welding or silver soldering; the sleeve 8 is held at its nodal point by a thick grooved flange 11 in a bush 9 rotatable by a worm 13. Coolant is supplied to the space around the transducer core by a feed pipe 14 and is maintained at a level below the top of the core by an extraction pipe 15. The bush 9 and surrounding casing 16 may be vertically adjusted on the slide 4 and locked by a clamping screw 17. Abrasive slurry is fed to the work by a centrifugal pump, and in the modification shown in Fig. 6, the tool may be automatically retracted at pre-set intervals to permit the supply of abrasive slurry to the work from a pump which delivers it through a duct 37, Fig. 6, to a ring-shaped duct 38 surrounding the tool holder. Jets 36 keep the suspension circulating in the pump reservoir 41 to which the slurry is returned from a perforated tray 39.
