Abstract

<PICT:0968264/C6-C7/1> Apparatus for degassing metals comprises a siphon device having two tubular limbs connected by a closed launder obliquely disposed with respect to the limbs and means for producing a sub-atmospheric pressure in the siphon device, each limb being associated with a vessel holding molten metal. As shown, molten metal from a ladle 8 is received in a ladle 1 in which is disposed one limb 3 of a siphon device 2 comprising a launder 5 and a second leg 4 is in the form of a vacuum vessel which may contain a mould 11. The part of the launder in the vessel 4 is open on its upper side as shown, and has an aperture 13 through which the degassed metal falls into the mould. A diaphragm 6 which may be pierced by a rod 7 may be provided in the leg 3. The second leg may be a mould, the launder ending in an air-tight joint with the mould and a connection to a vacuum pump, Fig. 2 (not shown). In a further modification, the second leg may be in the form of a thistle funnel, the leg dipping below the surface of metal in a ladle, Fig. 3 (not shown).
