Abstract
<PICT:0968239/C6-C7/1> In an electrolytic endless abrasive belt-type grinding machine, electrolyte is supplied to the surface of a workpiece 47, through perforations 21, 29, respectively in a belt 19 and its supporting platen 26, from a chamber 33. The workpiece 47 is connected as anode and some other part of the machine is connected as cathode. The perforated belt 19 is uniformly spaced from the workpiece by not more than 0.005 inch by an electrically non-conductive abrasive grit, e.g. aluminium oxide, silicon carbide or diamond bort. The belt may comprise a strip of woven copper or aluminium or may be of non-conductive material with electrically conductive paint on its rearward side. The platen 26 may be electrically conductive, e.g. of tungsten carbide, and be connected cathodically or, if not conductive, a casing 31 or a terminal within it may be used as cathode. The used electrolyte is caught in a basin 39 and recirculated by a pump 37. The electrolysing current is unidirectional and may be steady or pulsing. A voltage of 10 is referred to. 80-90% of material removal may be electrolytic. The platen 26 or an insert 26a may be changed to give a different pattern of openings. For shaping a workpiece, concave or convex platens may be used with rollers to guide the belt.
