Abstract

967,984. Stirring molten metal. E. A. OLSSON. Aug. 1, 1962 [Aug. 3, 1961], No. 29588/62. Heading F4B. Overheating in the melting troughs or heating channels of electric metal melting or holding furnaces is prevented by blowing gas into the melt near or in the trough or channel so as to promote the circulation of the melt. In a submerged resistor induction furnace, Fig. 2, the sides of the melting trough 3 are independently connected to the furnace space proper by slots 9 formed in the furnace lining. The secondary circuit is completed by a metallic bar 11 extending through the lining between the slots 9. Air or gas is blown into one slot 9 so as to increase the flow out of and into the trough 3 from the main body of the melt. Gas may be fed asymmetrically to the throat of a melting trough open to the furnace space over the greater part of its width. In a furnace heated by the passage of current between electrodes 23, 24, Fig. 3, over-heating in the channel 22 is prevented by supplying gas to the channel by a nozzle 25. The gas supplied may be a refining gas, and alternative supplies may be provided so that cheap gas may be used during holding periods to replace an expensive refining gas.
