An apparatus for collecting the blood of a laboratory animal, such as a rat, comprises a base 1 having, in its upper surface, a trough 3 to receive the body of the animal, a blade 7 pivoted to the base, in the manner of a guillotine, the blade having a suitably placed aperture associated with a collecting device 10. After the head has been severed the blood passes into the container 10 from which it is drained through an outlet 13 into a suitable receptacle. The blade assembly may have a counter-weight 9 and a stop 14, to limit the downward movement of the blade, may be attached to the base 1.
