Abstract

An aryl methane of the formula: R1OOCH.N-R-NHCOOR1, wherein R is an arylene, halogenated arylene or a bis arylene substituted alkylene radical, and R1 is an aryl or halogenated aryl radical, is used as a thermal stability additive in silicone rubber compositions. The methane is usually used in amount of 0.1 to 10% by wt. of the siloxane, and can be derived from the base catalysed reaction of an aryl-hydroxide and an aryldiisocyanate, many examples of which are given. The specified ingredients of the silicone rubber formulations include (1) convertible siloxanes containing alkyl, cyanoalkyl, alkenyl, aryl or halo-aryl radical, (2) fillers-silica (fume, precipitated and surface modified), titania, lithopone, calcium carbonate, diatomaceous earth and iron oxide, (3) pigments -TiO2 and Cr2O3, and (4) curing agents-benzoyl and bis-dichlorobenzoyl-peroxides and t-butyl perbenzoate. The compositions may also be cured, without curing catalysts, by high energy electron irradiation or g -radiation. In a typical example (1) a mixture of a methylphenyl-siloxane and fume silica was milled on a two-roll mill, while methylene bis-(1,4-phenylene-phenyl urethane) was added; bis-dichlorobenzoyl peroxide was then added and the mixture, in sheet form, was heat-cured.
