Abstract

Alpha-olefins are stereospecifically polymerized, to high polymers having a regular structure, in the absence of oxygen and water and in the presence of a catalytic system comprising: (a) one or more transition metal compounds of metals of Group IV, V and/or VI of the Mendel<\>aeeff Periodic Table and (b) a compound having the general formula RR1Al-C CR11 in which R and R1 are the same or different alkyl groups and R11 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group. The a -olefins may be ethylene, propylene, butene and 4-methylpentene-1. Exemplified catalyst components are titanium trichloride activated by grinding, titanium tetrachloride, vanadium tetrachloride and aluminium diethyl-monoacetylide. Conventional activators and molecular weight regulators may be added. The polymerization may be effected in a hydrocarbon solvent e.g. n-heptene. The polymer is purified with hydrochloric acid and methanol. Other purifying media are also listed. The polymers may be formed into textile fibres or films. Specification 967,573 is referred to.
