Abstract

In a process for continuously washing at raised temperature highly polymeric organic substances having a viscosity of 102 to 105 poises at the washing temperature, the preheated highly polymeric organic substance in a viscous state is reduced to a plurality of fine filaments by passage through nozzles or a perforated plate, is treated while flowing freely, under a pressure of 5 to 30 atmospheres, with a hot washing liquid in which the polymeric organic substance is substantially insoluble but which dissolves the impurities, the polymeric substance and washing liquid are subjected to further intimate mixing, and the polymeric substance is subsequently separated from the washing liquid at the same or lower pressure. The flowing polymeric substance may be subjected to a stream of hot washing liquid directed transversely to the direction of flow of the polymeric substance, and the further mixing may be effected by passing the polymeric substance and washing liquid through an emulsifier. Apparatus suitable for carrying out the process of the invention is described and illustrated, and examples describe the washing of (1) polyvinyl acetate with water, (2) a copolymer of ethylene and propylene with alcohol, (3) a copolymer of vinyl acetate and vinyl laurate with water, (4) polyvinyl propionate and a copolymer of vinyl acetate and dibutyl maleate with water, (5) a melt of polyvinyl acetate and dibutyl phthalate, (6) polyethylene and polypropylene with isopropanol, (7) a silicone resin with water, (8) gum arabic with methanol and (9) a wax-like highly condensed aminocrotonic acid ester with isopropanol.
