[Also in Division F2] A drive device for the operation of a sliding window in a motor vehicle comprises a driving shaft 12 having a recess 40 formed in the periphery thereof, a toothed annular element 11 punched from sheet metal and substantially coaxial with the shaft, a driving element 32 extending in an axial direction of the shaft and in the recess 40 and fast with the element 11 for driving it when driven by the shaft 12, a coil spring 26 encircling the shaft for frictionally engaging a braking surface on the cupped part 14 and end portions 25, 27 of the coil spring bent over inwardly and which are adapted to abut shoulders on the periphery of the shaft. As shown notches 36, 38 in the toothed wheel 11 engage the ends of limbs 30, 34 of the driving element 32 which are accommodated in the recesses 40, 42 of the shaft head part 42. The latter is fitted on serrations 22 of the shaft 12 which is also formed with serrations 20 on which is mounted a crank handle 21, Fig. 1 (not shown). The shaft may alternatively be driven by an electric motor. The toothed wheel 11 which may have spur-form or helical teeth engages the helical rib 6<SP>1</SP> of a cable housed in a tubular guide and connected to the window. The spring 26 is housed in a recess 44 in the shaft head 42 and frictionally engages the cupped part 14 which is screwed or riveted to a part 16. The arrangement is such that when the shaft 12 is rotated one of the shoulders on the shaft head 42 engages one of the ends of the spring 26 to reduce its diameter thus allowing the toothed wheel 11 to drive the cable to move the window. In another embodiment the shaft head 42 is formed of a plurality of discs which have a serrated central bore and outer peripheral recesses, the discs having their radial faces in contact. The driving element 32 has four limbs, two of which are accommodated in the recesses in the shaft head and the other two engage apertures in the toothed wheel. In a further embodiment the toothed wheel may be formed with an integral axial tongue which engages with a recess in the driving shaft.
