Apparatus for determining the mass flow rate Ms of a medium of density ps, in suspension in another medium (e.g. a liquid) of density pL, comprises a mass flowmeter 1 providing a signal MT representing mass flow rate; a volume flowmeter 4 providing a signal VT representing volume flow rate and, in combination with a variable resistance 8, a signal VT#L; and a differential amplifier 7 to which the signals MT and VT#L are fed and which feeds to a visual instrument 9 and to an integrator 10 a signal (MT-VT#L). #s/#s-#L, equal to Ms. The liquid (say), with its solid suspension, passes through the flowmeters 1 and 4 in succession. Signal MT is fed to a visual instrument 2 and integrator 3. Signal VT is fed to a visual instrument 6. The arrangement may be used in the case of the dispersion of one liquid in another, or of a solid or liquid in a gas. The signal from amplitude 7 may be used to control a servo system operating a fluid flow valve or regulating the flow of material from a hopper. The scaling of the apparatus constants may be effected continuously and automatically.
