Abstract

966,691. Air intakes on aircraft. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. May 29, 1961 [June 18, 1960], No. 21493/60. Heading B7G. [Also in Divisions B5, El and F1] A flexible device has at least one edge which is adapted to be secured to the inner concave surface of a curved supporting structure, said edge comprising a beaded portion having a reinforcement comprising a strut which is adapted to be loaded in compression between abutments provided by the supporting structure. The invention is described with reference to an aircraft jet propulsion engine air intake, the area of which may be increased during take-off. The aircraft is provided with two air intakes 2, one at either side of the fuselage, each intake being approximately half-cylindrical in form, the flexible devices 4 being shown in their extended positions at 50. The intake 2 comprises an inner concave surface 7, an outer convex surface 8 and a leading edge portion 9, a flexible sheet 5 of rubber or rubber-like material being secured thereto. The inner edge 11 of the flexible sheet is beaded and engages in a groove 15 formed in the inner concave surface 7 of the intake. The bead is retained in the groove by means of a strut 28 which extends through the bead, the strut being of hollow tube form. Each end 29 of the strut is received in a hollow space 30 in the head 31 of a screwed bolt 32, the screwed portion of the bolt engaging in a fixed abutment 35 so that rotation of the bolt places the strut 28 in compression and the bead 11 is retained in the groove 15. A locking nut 36 is provided for the bolt. The outer edge 12 of the flexible sheet is likewise beaded and engages in a groove 16 formed in the outer convex surface 8 of the air intake. The bead is retained in the groove by means of a wire 17 which extends through the bead. Each end 18 of the wire is secured to a screwed rod 20 which passes freely through an abutment 21 secured to the fuselage, a nut 23 on the end of the rod engaging the abutment whereby the wire 17 may be placed in tension to retain the bead 12 within the groove 16. The longitudinallyextending edges 19 of the flexible sheet 5 are also beaded and have wires 42 extending through the beads. The forward end of each wire is secured to an eye 44 which is engaged on the end 29 of the strut 28, while the rearward end of each wire is connected by a turnbuckle 46 to an eye-bolt 47 which is engaged on the rod 20 secured to the wire 17, rotation of the turnbuckle placing the wire 42 in tension, thereby retaining the bead 19 in the groove 41. An inflatable bag or sac 10 is disposed between the surfaces 7, 8 of the air intake and the flexible sheet 5, the bag being inflatable by means of compressed air so as to distend the flexible sheet 5 to the position 50 indicated in Fig. I. When not in use a source of vacuum is applied to the flexible sheet whereby the sheet is caused to lie closely adjacent the surfaces 7, 8.
