Abstract

<PICT:0966604/C6-C7/1> A measuring tool, e.g. a gauge, is made with a wear-resisting surface by using a matrix as cathode of required size and coated with diamond particles which are then fixed in position and bound together preferably by electro-deposited metal. The matrix is then removed, e.g. by chemical dissolution, leaving an accurately formed surface. An aluminium rod of required dimensions is coated at 10 and 11 with an insulating material where coating is not desired, and is used as a cathode immersed in a plating solution 7 of Cu, Ni, or Cr. Diamond dust is applied to the area 12, and then plated with electro-deposited metal to bind the particles together and to the cathode. This is then removed, and the aluminium dissolved out with alkali, leaving an accurately dimensioned gauge on the concave surface. If the plating bath is used at temperatures different from that of normal use of the finished gauge, an adjustment of cathode dimensions is necessary. The thickness of the diamond layer is a few tenths of a millimetre. The diamond powder may first be scrubbed in a drum to remove very sharp points. The finished surface may be polished with fine diamond powder. Gauges with a convex working surface are described using a ring of stainless steel of low expansion coefficient, the diamond dust being applied inside the ring. The process may be applied to forming micrometer plane surfaces, screw threads, or other parts submitted to hard wear, e.g. in textile machinery.
