Abstract

966,219. Fluid-pressure brakes. FIAT S.p.A., and P. S. BALDWIN. Sept. 5, 1960 [Sept. 5, 1959], No. 30527/60. Headings F2E and F2F. An hydraulic pressure booster cylinder for vehicle brakes comprises a cylindrical chamber 11 closed at one end by a wall 11a and at the other by a member 12, a connection 31 to a pressure liquid source being provided near the wall 11a, and a piston 13 slidably mounted in the chamber 11 adjacent the wall 11a so that its end wall face is subjected to the pressure liquid and it subdivides the chamber 11 into two chambers A and B interconnected by a passageway, the flow of liquid through which is controlled by a lift valve 26. A reaction spring 20 is interposed between the piston 13 and a washer 21 abutted by an expansible ring 22 carried by the cylinder casing. The valve interconnects the chambers A and B when the auxiliary piston 13 is near the wall 11a at the end of its stroke, but cuts them off after the auxiliary piston 13 is displaced against the spring 20 and prevents return of pressure liquid from the chamber A to the chamber B when the pressure in A exceeds that in B; the spring 20 being mounted under an initial load to allow displacement of the auxiliary piston 13 to occur only when the pressure in the cylinder reaches a predetermined value p1. As shown in Fig. 1, the member 12 is movable and actuates a brake pad whilst the space A is connected through opening 38 to an actuator for another brake pad. In modifications, the lift valve 26 is omitted and the connection between spaces A and B is interrupted by the closure of a passage by the piston itself or by a packing ring carried by the piston. The member 12 may be fired and the space A may be connected to actuators for the brake pads. Specifications 688,382 and 966,218 are referred to.
