Abstract
965,966. Screw propellers; de-icing annular wing aircraft. RHEIN - FLUGZEUGBAU G.m.b.H. July 18, 1961 [July 23, 1960], No. 25920/61. Headings B7V and B7W. [Also in Division F2] A cushion of compressed gas 15 is maintained in the annular region between the circle swept by the blade tip of the propeller 3 and the internal periphery of the tunnel 1 within which the propeller rotates. The compressed gas, e.g. air, is supplied through a duct 4 in the propeller blade and also a duct 8 and 9 in the tunnel housing. The source of air may be a compressor or the ram effect of the airstream together with the centrifugal effect of the rotating blade. A further embodiment also makes use of nozzles connecting with the boundary layer of the blade and the blade duct to induce a flow of air to augment that already in the duct. Exhaust gases may be mixed with compressed air to effect de-icing.
