Abstract
Method of manufacturing a transparent luminescent screen comprises forming, e.g. by vacuum coating, a transparent layer of the base material of a phosphor on a transparent supporting plate, effecting contact between the whole of the free surface of the layer and a mass of powder of the phosphor or a mixture of powders of the phosphor base material and the activator which can be in excess, and heating the powder at such a temperature and for such a time as to cause activator ions to diffuse into the appropriate lattice sites in the transparent layer to cause activation thereof. A quartz supporting plate can be placed on or in a bed of phosphor powder with the transparent layer facing downwards. Phosphor base modifying constituents can be introduced during the formation of the transparent layer of base material on the supporting plate or can be introduced by diffusion from the mass of phosphor powder. In one example magnesium potassium fluoride is the base material, zinc fluoride is the base modifying constituent and manganese is the activator and heating is at 800 DEG C. for 2 minutes. In another example the phosphor base material is zinc sulphide and the activator is silver and heating is at 850 DEG C. for 5 minutes.
