Abstract

965,765. Packing machines. P. L. CHELLE. Nov. 14, 1960 [Nov. 19, 1959; Nov. 4, 1960], No. 39100/60. Heading B8C. A machine for wrapping articles and packing them into containers comprises a wrapper blank supply station from which the blanks are conveyed step-by-step through a creasing and initial folding station, an article supply and final folding station and thence to a station for loading the wrapped articles into containers. A blank 8 is fed from a magazine 7 by means of a reciprocating pusher 19 which moves it along a platform 140 to a station B (Fig. 2a). The pusher is then lowered slightly below the level of the platform and returned. During this movement, the blank is acted on by depending blades 23, 23a, 24, 24a, 25, 25a on a support 22 to form creases as indicated in Fig. 6. Blades 39, 39a are then raised to fold up the edges of the blank as indicated in Fig. 7. Levers 143, 143a, pivoted at 141, 141a and carrying rollers 144, 144a force inwardly the upturned edges of the blank, the blades 25, 25a pivoting inwardly to allow this. The blank is now as shown in Fig. 8. The folding blades are then withdrawn from the blank and it is forwarded in the partly folded condition by a second reciprocating pusher 19a to station C. A former consisting of three parallel plates 54, 55, 54a (Figs. 2a and 4) is moved over the blank by a lever 58. Simultaneous to this movement a pair of bottles from a conveyer 81 is lowered by a rotating apron 97 and pushed forward by a lever 101 into position between the plates. Fingers 72, 72a are then raised thus folding the blank about the creases formed by the blades 23, 23a to the form shown in Fig. 9. Top folder plates 80, 80a are swung towards one another to finally form the blank into a double tube, each containing a bottle, as shown in Fig. 10. The former is then withdrawn to its initial position. The entubed bottles are fed forwards by a third reciprocating pusher 19b, the folds being maintained by means of a plate 138 during this movement, and deposited on a support plate 135. The support being intermittently lowered by cam means (Fig. 5) so that a stack may be formed on it. When the stack reaches the desired size it is pushed by a reciprocating pusher into a box on a conveyer 127. The box is stopped in the correct position by a stop-plate 128. When the first stack has been inserted the stop 128 is withdrawn and the box moves on to abut against a second stop 128a which positions it so that a second stack may be inserted beside the first. All of the working components of the machine are controlled by spring and cam means and work in synchronism with the rotation of a master drive-shaft 3. The reciprocating pushers 19, 19a, 19b are mounted on a pair of sliders 16 one on each side of the machine. In another embodiment (Figs. 12-14, not shown) a double width stack, each layer of which comprises two pairs of entubed bottles is built up on the support plate from which it is pushed bodily into the box. In a further embodiment (Fig. 17) the two devices which fold the blank from the form shown in Fig. 6 to that in Fig. 8 are combined into a single unit. The blades 39, 39a are replaced by supports 217 having teeth 218 which mesh with pinions 219 mounted on the machine frame. Each pinion meshes with a pinion attached to a lever 222. When the slider is raised the supports fold the blank as shown in Fig. 7 and the levers 222 rotate to fold in the edges as in Fig. 8.
