A washing apparatus for vehicles comprises two brush carriers 2, 2<SP>1</SP>, Figs. 1 to 3, drivable respectively along the opposite sides of a stationary vehicle 1, in opposite directions, each carrier having a pair of driven rocker brushes 3a, 3b mounted at the ends of arms 4a, 4b, swivellably carried by shafts 14 on the carrier so that the arms normally extend in opposite directions and can be urged towards the vehicle by pressure means, the carriers 2, 2<SP>1</SP> being operatively unconnected, e.g. by electrical or hydraulic control elements in order to prevent the simultaneous presence of both carriers at one end of the vehicle. Each carrier has upper rockers 8 and lateral rollers 9 engaging an upper rail 10 and lower rollers 6 driven by a motor (not shown) on the carrier and engaging a rail 7. The rails 10 are carried by spray arches 11 and 12 whilst the rails 7 are carried by the ground. The brushes 3a, 3b are driven by motors 19 on the carrier. The latter has an upper arm 15 for carrying one end of a flexible cable 18 running over rollers 16 and carrying conduits for water and washing liquid, electric supply cables for the motors on the carrier, and a pressure line for operating the swivel arms 4a, 4b. The carriers each have four electric limit switches, two of which cooperate with stops at each end of the apparatus whilst the other two are operable by the swivel arms, when swivelled. When a vehicle is positioned correctly in the apparatus is finally moves a control rod 21 depending in its path to operate a main electric control switch. Thereafter each brush carrier is traversed automatically along the respective vehicle side and ends as described with reference to Figs. 5 to 11 (not shown).
