Abstract

965,471. Slip casting core elements. HOWE SOUND CO. Nov. 3, 1961 [Feb. 9, 1961], No. 39475/61. Heading B5A. Core elements for turbine blades or vanes are formed by slip casting from silica, alumina, zircon, zirconium, nickel or chromium, by pouring a slip 18 into a mould 11 of plastic, wax, rubber or metal, which has projections to form passageways in the core element and a plaster or ceramic absorbent slab 16, or plug 22, or both, covering the mould 11, to prevent evaporation of the moisture, whereby the liquid portion of the slip 18 is absorbed into the slab 16 and plug 22 and a solid portion is gradually built up. The core element is then dried and fired. To accelerate the absorption rate vacuum means 19 is used. The mould may comprise two halves with an absorbent part 33, Fig. 4, and a non-absorbent part 35, 34 with openings 36 providing additional absorbing surfaces for the liquid.
