N-Acylaminoaldehydes are prepared by reacting N-acylamino-olefins with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the initial molar ratio of from 1:0.5 to 1:10 in the presence of cobalt, rhodium or a cobalt or rhodium compound as catalyst. Suitable compounds of cobalt or rhodium are the carbonyls of these metals, as well as the oxides, hydroxides, halides or stearates. Examples describe the preparation of N-phthalyl-g -aminobutyraldehyde, N-phthalyl-b -amino-isobutyraldehyde, N-diacetyl-g -amino-butyraldehyde, N-phthalyl-a -aminopropionaldehyde, N-phthalyl-b -aminopropionaldehyde, N-acetyl-aminobutyraldehyde and N-phthalyl-amino-b -phenylpropionaldehyde. The products may be purified via the bisulphite addition compound.
