Abstract

965,185. Forming tube from foaming chemicals. DANIEL ROSENTHAL. March 13, 1962 [March 13, 1961], No. 9699/62. Heading B5A. Expanded tubing, e.g. of curved, square or polygonal cross-section, made of rigid polyurethane, epoxy, or phenolic foams, is continuously formed by introducing foamable chemicals between a continuously moving strip of e.g. P.V.C., film which is then joined to form an outer casing and a simultaneously moving inner core of film. Inner film core 6, formed about mandrel 1 by former 4 with overlapped edges sealed by rollers 5, passes along mandrel 1 into the outer casing former 8, of double walled construction up to the point 25 and by means of which outer casing film 10 is guided to the form of a semi-circular section into which, between points 25 and 28, foamable chemicals are deposited from mixing head 11. Thereafter, a further double-walled section of former 8 between points 28 and 45 guides film 10 to complete the enclosure for forming a vertical seal by means of rollers 46 to form a tube 47. Alternatively, the chemicals may be inserted by a vertical nozzle between adjacent vertical sealing edges immediately prior to sealing or, Fig. 16, the tube 47 may be formed with overlapping edges between which the chemicals are introduced by a horizontal nozzle 82 prior to sealing. The chemicals foam and cure between tube 47 and inner core 6 in passing through mould 13 comprising a hollow annulus with additional coating or curing affected in passage through housing 14. Air. which may be cool or warm and contain talc or steatite, circulates and passes out through holes in the mandrel and mould to provide an air cushion on which the inner core 6 and tube 7 ride. Alternative films which may be employed are polyethylene, nylon, cellophane, polytetrafluoroethylene, polyester, cellulose acetate, paper or metal foil or laminations thereof and sealing may also be effected by adhesive or mechanical crimping.
