Abstract
1456198 Moulding plastics containers IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 Nov 1973 [29 Nov 1972] 55088/72 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions B8D and B8P] A container of plastics material, which is blow moulded or vacuum formed from an extruded tubular parison, comprises an unfoamed layer and a simultaneously extruded foamed layer which is absent from the region in which the container wall is welded together by clamping of the parison prior to the blow moulding or vacuum forming. The unfoamed layer may comprise a polyolefine or unsaturated nitrile polymer, and the foamed layer may be a thermosetting or thermoplastic plastics, but both layers preferably comprise polyolefines. The foamed layer is foamed before, during, or after the blow moulding or vacuum forming. The parison may be of circular section, but may be locally thickened when the container is of cubical shape. The foamed layer may be on the exterior or interior of the container, and may extend completely around the container circumference, or only part way therearound such as to leave a window unobscured by opaque foam, or may extend only along the corners or around only two sides of a cubical container. The die head from which the parison is extruded may comprise an annular extrusion outlet defined between a mandrel 1 and a surrounding die 3, Fig. 2, to which the plastics of the unfoamed and foamed layers are respectively delivered along passages 7, 6, on either side of a partition 5. The absence of the foamed layer from the clamping region of the parison is obtained by displacing the partition 5 to engage the mandrel 1, at 9, and close the passage 6, the parison so being produced having the foamed layer 26 inset within the unfoamed layer 27, Fig. 2A. By displacing the mandrel 1 away from the partition 5 when both layers are being extruded, the foam layer is proud of the unfoamed layer, Figs. 3 and 3A (not shown). The die may also be displaceable, but where the foamed layer is outermost, the intermittent extrusion is preferably effected by the partition being displaceable into engagement with the die. When extruding downwardly, the die parts may be displaceable to compensate for progressive thinning of the parison during extrusion. A passage, or spaced passages 6, may alternately extend part way around the die outlet to produce the corresponding foamed layer, or layers spaced apart around the container periphery.
