A pack-carrier 10 (Figs. 1 and 2) comprises a corset having a padded vertically elongated dorsal plate 12 (e.g. of glass fibre reinforced synthetic resin) curvilinear in horizontal section and shaped in vertical section to conform to the shape of the back having a valley 26 and flared hip portion 28. Integrally formed with the plate 12 are oppositely disposed lateral plate portions 18 and 20, and at the lower region neutral reinforcement plate portions 22 and 24. The upper edge 14 of the plate is disposed at the base of the neck and the bottom portion 16 is disposed at the hip region. The carrier is provided with shoulder straps 38 and 40 which connect to corresponding straps 42 and 44 secured to the ventral plates 22 and 24 to which also abdominal straps 34 and 36 are secured. A load shelf is provided at the lower extremity of the carrier. Loads may be attached to plate 12 by means of strap elements woven through slots to form loops 46 (Fig. 2). The carrier may be adapted to carry liquids or solids by having a cannister arrangement (Fig. 5, not shown) formed on the assembly in which the dorsal plate forms a wall of the cannister. For adjusting the carrier to fit different sizes an inflatable bag having a pressure inlet may be attached to the inner surface of the plate 12. Ventilation vents may be provided in the corset. The padding may be of cellular material such that the assembly is buoyant and may act as flotation gear and the corset may be of bullet or shrapnel proof material.
