Abstract

Foamed cross-linked copolymers of ethylene and propylene, mixtures of copolymers of ethylene and propylene with polypropylene, polybutadienes, copolymers of ethylene and divinyloxyethane and copolymers of isobutylene and isopropenyl benzylchloride are prepared by foaming a composition of the polymer with a blowing agent and before substantial collapse of the foamed polymer has occurred, subjecting the foamed polymer to irradiation for 1-1800 seconds to provide a dosage of from 1 to 20 megarads. Suitable copolymers contain 25-65% ethylene and 75-35% propylene or at least 80% of ethylene/propylene copolymer and not more than 20% polypropylene. The blowing agent may be used in amount 0.05 to 5 gram moles per 100 grams of polymer and may be isobutane, propane or a fluorinated aliphatic compound or a mixture thereof.
