Abstract

[Also in Division F2] The control valve 12 (Fig. 1) of a power steering system includes at each end of the valve spool 52 chambers 136, 140 communicating in the neutral position of the valve with fluid inlet ports 106, 110 by way of grooves 138, 142 extending partially across the adjacent lands 122, 126 on the valve spool 52. After an initial displacement of the spool 52 in either direction communication between one groove 138, 142 and the associated inlet port 106, 110 is cut-off whereupon fluid contained in the adjacent chamber 136 or 140 can escape only through a small clearance surrounding the land 122 or 126. The chambers 136, 140 thereby act as dashpots which damp movement of the spool to prevent " overshooting " of the valve and oscillation of the steering system. The Pitman arm (not shown) of a worm and sector steering gear is connected to a drag link 88 which effects displacement of the spool 52 by means of a ball joint 16 to control fluid flow through ports 114, 118 and passages 38, 40 to a double-acting fluid actuator 14. A ballvalve 144 normally held closed by fluid supplied through the inlet port 106 allows transfer of fluid between opposite ends of the actuator 14 to permit manual steering upon fluid pressure failure. Fig. 9 shows a steering system wherein a modified control valve 160 controls fluid flow to the actuators 306 of steerable wheels 284. The valve 160 (Fig. 8), includes a spool 198 displaced by pistons 274, 278 actuated by a positive displacement pump 336 connected to a steering wheel 334. Lands 202, 206 on the spool 198 prevent flow to and from the actuators 306 through ports 186, 188 when the spool is in the neutral position, fluid flow between inlet ports 178, 182 and an outlet port 184 being permitted through bores 220, 222 in the spool. Follow-up actuators 292 (Fig. 9), equalize the pressure on the pistons 274, 278 to restore the spool 198 to the neutral position upon completion of a steering movement. A pump 318 supplies fluid from a reservoir 320 to the valve 160, and the return conduit 324 supplies make-up fluid to the valve actuating circuit through one-way valves 350, 352, excessive pressure in the actuating circuit being relieved by one-way valves 354, 356. A valve according to the invention may be used in a power steering system for pivoting the frame sections of an articulated vehicle. Specification 824,611 is referred to.
